Barbera

Barbera is a wine grape variety from Monferrato in Piemonte, Italy.
It produces an intense red wine with deep color, low tannins and high acidity. Century-old vines still exist in many regional capable of producing robust red wines with intense fruit, higher levels of tannin, and good ageability.

When young, the wines offer a very intense aroma of fresh red and black berries. In the lighter styles, there are notes of cherries, raspberries and blueberries. Wines produced from riper grapes exhibit the darker fruit characteristics of blackberry and black cherries. Many producers utilize toasted oak barrels, adding complexity to the intense fruit of these wines.

In Italy the best known wines produced from Barbera are Barbera d'Asti and Barbera d'Alba.

The varietal is often used in California to provide "backbone" for so-called "jug wines".
